This WordPress blog is being filled with old content from blogger.xs4all.nl/rrolfje. This is done for several reasons:

  1. The .Text blogging software at blogger.xs4all.nl is no longer supported, but still has some bugs.
  2. The .Text software does not support exports, making the possibility of migration to another system harder at every added post
  3. WordPress blogging software is easier to write in, and overcomes problems 1 and 2, with an active community and relatively good export functionality

There are some drawbacks however. Migration is a 100% manual process, so it takes a while. During migration, I will not migrate comments on posts, unless they contain valuable information to the community (such as answers to technical questions).

Another interesting experiment is to see if I can cram the old blogposts into the 50MB free space at WordPress. At XS4ALL, I did not pay for the used space, and I have no idea if I ever crossed some boundary, it just allways worked. My aim is to keep this blog free from payments (from me, that is).

And finally, I’m stuck with the themes WordPress offers me. I’d love to make the page wider, but then you, the reader, are stuck with lime-green or other ugly layouts. The other option is for me to pay WordPress $15 a year so I can edit my own CSS. That’s not going to happen.

What I need to find out is that if I buy a space upgrade, or a CSS upgrade, what will happen if I fail to pay for that the next year. Will they delete everything over 50MB, and if so, which files? And if I choose to pay again, will they restore the deleted files? Will they remove the custom RSS?

The “yearly payment” really sucks, but as I said, WordPress has a nice export feature, and can be installed on my own machine as well, if need be.

Meanwhile I’ve got a lot of migration to do, and descisions to make. Enjoy the journey…

All blog posts which were originally located at xs4all.nl are now migrated into this wordpress blog. If you miss anything, please let me know.
